Even though bed bugs can seem like they come out of nowhere, there are keyways that homeowners can reduce their risk of an infestation. For example, before you bring any secondhand furniture into your house, make sure you’ve checked it thoroughly for signs of bed bugs. You can also use protective covers around box springs and mattresses to block off many of the insect’s most common hiding spots. If you’re someone who uses shared laundry facilities, make sure to stay vigilant. Use clean plastic bags to transport items, and then place those items directly into the bag after they’ve finished drying – don’t fold them until you get home. A real estate inspection or home inspection is not an appraisal or a check for compliance with building codes; it’s also not an evaluation of environmental hazards. See the NYS Standards of Practice for more information on the limitations of a home inspection.
