While there is a seemingly endless list of home safety tasks knowledgeable homeowners must remember to accomplish, a few significant duties often go unrecognized. However, this doesn’t mean they are any less essential. For example, many people forget to perform attic fan maintenance. During the spring and summer months, make sure you’re keeping the attic fan clean. Then, in fall and winter, the fan should be sealed off. You should also be cleaning your home’s smoke alarm to ensure that it stays in proper working order. A dirty or dusty alarm might struggle to detect smaller amounts of smoke or carbon monoxide. A real estate inspection or home inspection is not an appraisal or a check for compliance with building codes; it’s also not an evaluation of environmental hazards. See the NYS Standards of Practice for more information on the limitations of a home inspection.
